Shortly after lunch today a Great Egret was discovered
at Middlebrook Lake in Bristol, TN. It was perched on
one of the tree limbs just above the water's edge along
the wooded section of the impoundment.
The passing of the front seems to have been good to
us.
This is a very late record for this species but there are
several later records for Northeast Tennessee -- all in
November. The latest Southwest Virginia record
I'm aware of is Oct 31 at Rural Retreat Lake.
The Ross's Goose was also present along with a
Canada Goose that had a strange looking white-like
band on its left leg and what appeared to be a USF&WS
band on te right leg. I could not see anything that looked
like numbers or letters on the band but I was looking from
a great distance. The apparent band was twice the
height of the metal bird band on the other leg. There is
an outside chance that the band was, in fact, some type
of splint put on an injured leg by a rehaber. The bird
seemed to be favoring that leg.
None of the three Double-crested Cormorants apprered
to have the color band that is from New York state but I
admit I didn't get a real good look at one of the birds.
Bufflehead 5, Ring-necked Duck 4, Hooded Mergansers 40,
Great Blue Heron 2, Canada Goose 200, many Mallards
later in the eveing.
Let's go birding....
