McDaniel residence
Johnson City, TN
Davis Marina Boone Lake
South Holston Lake/Wier Dam
Sullivan County, TN
Sammy Cross and I were welcomed into Larry McDaniel's Johnson City home this
afternoon around 12:30 and were soon greeted by a stunning specimen of
Selasphorus hummingbird. Prior to our departure Allen Trently and Rob Biller
arrived.
Our next stop was Davis Marina on Boone Lake where we saw two Bonaparte's
Gulls, six Ring-billed Gulls, three Pied-billed Grebes, two Double Crested
Cormorants, Mallards and a Great Blue Heron.
On our way to Musick's Campground, South Holston Lake Sammy placed a cellular
call to Wallace Coffey where he learned of the Bald Eagle at the weir dam - we
changed our destination. Sammy was thrilled to see an unhurried close range
view of a much desired life bird! We also saw six American Wigeons, two female
Hooded Mergansers, seventeen Bufflehead, two Great Blue Herons, Mallards, Rock
Doves and four Ring-billed Gulls while at the weir.
Musick's Campground was holding lots of birds on and off the point. Sammy and I
saw forty-five Killdeer on the point with one Ring-billed Gull. A large raft of
eighty mixed Gulls including Boneparte's, Herring and Ring-billed were fun to
watch take flight and soar briefly before reuniting on the waters surface.
Three Pied-billed Grebes, four unidentified Grebes, four Common Loons,
twenty-seven unidentified water birds in a single raft, a Great Blue Heron and
a swimming six point White tailed Deer were also seen. All this activity was
observed to the left of the point but only the twenty-seven un identified water
birds appeared to be in VA.
'Til we bird again
