Bristol Area Birders:

Tom Horsch and I were at Middlebrook Lake in
Bristol this morning when the Ross's Goose
arrived at 8:40 a.m. It flew in with a flock of
about 200+ Canada Geese. The flock came
low over the big white house at the upper end
of the lake. This is indication it is not roosting
there at night. The roosting area may be in
Virginia since the lake is adjacent to the
stateline.

Allen Boyington and others have asked about
the chances of seeing this bird this weekend.
I think the chances are good.

The bird seems to frequen the upper end
of the lake but not always. Larry McDaniel
and I found it sleeping on the parking lot
pavement at the swimming pool. You can't
see it from our usual vantage point on the dam.
Others have found it up the lake. To reach
this area go in the Middlebrook subdivision
entrance and got to the back at the pool.

Had Hooded Merganser (20) and Double-crested
Cormorant (2) at Middlebrook.

Birding at Musick's Campground, just after
Rick Knight was there this morning, produced
many of the species he had. Missed were the
seven Eared Grebe.

Additional birds included Ruddy Duck (1)
Greater Yellowlegs (1) and Bonapartes Gull (1).
The yellowlegs was feeding on the launching
ramp at Musick's.

The Surf Scoter (1) and Horned Grebe (1) were
in the Spring Creek Embayment and the scoter
feeding just off shore of Washington County
Park -- opportunity for those wanting the scoter
as a state bird.

Tom left in the morning with an upset stomach and
I birded on to Shady Valley, Johnson Co. Had
an American Pipit flying over Orchard Bog. We
have at least three American Kestrels apparently
on regular feeding areas in the valley. For some
reason, there are not many fall and winter
records there. A bird will be seen at the Quarry
Bog banding station during the fall.

Shady was absolutely beautiful with all the fall
colors and corn being harvested.

The Cranberry Cafe is under new management.
The Weavers bought the store last Friday -- he
is the tall man that cooks.

Let's go birding.....
