Gil Derouen and Bryan Stevens observed two American Avocets, reported
earlier by Rick Knight.
They could not see the birds from the bridge near Austin Springs in
Johnson City, Wash. Co., TN. They went beneath the bridge, walked the
shoreline downstream and, while watching about 8 Greater Yellowlegs,
two American Avocets flew onto a small island/sandbar. The yellowlegs
and avocets took flight several times, but generally only for a short
distance before settling down for a period of foraging.
The American Avocet was a life bird for Gil.
We also saw the several American Coots and at least one Ruddy Duck and
a Double-crested Cormorant. We also saw several Great Blue Herons.
There were other ducks present, but pressed for time, we did not
attempt to I.D. them.
Also, too distant for easy I.D., were smaller shorebirds.
We found the American Avocets at about 1:50 p.m. following sightings
earlier on Thursday by Reece Jamerson and Rick Knight.
Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
