[Bristol-Birds] Window-killed Yellow-billed Cuckoo

I got a call from Susan Peters in Elizabethton, Carter Co., TN, on
Friday, Oct. 5, at about 9:45 a.m. She had just had a bird killed from
a window impact at her home. She said the bird was unusual and wondered
if I might want to arrange for it to be given to the Milligan College
biology department collection.
She had identified the bird by the time I arrived at her home. It was a
Yellow-billed Cuckoo. She lives on a very wooded property in a section
of the city with some tall trees.
I know that the Herndon Chapter of TOS recently held its fall bird
count with no cuckoos observed and that the birds are probably not
expected this late in the fall. It was a beautiful specimen. The
chestnut patches in the wings were extremely vivid. Strangely, in the
hand, the cuckoo looked smaller than I would have expected.
Such a shame its migration got cut short.
