Area Birders,
On Oct 12th. I received a phone call from a teacher at Grundy High School,
asking if I would come by and identify a water bird that had been rescued from
the flat roof of the school. Upon arrival I found the bird to be a Pied-billed
Grebe, that had evidently mistaken standing water on the roof at night for a
small body of water. Without water the bird could not get airborne and had
become stranded. The bird was being kept in a cardboard box with a bowl of
water and seemed alert and uninjured. It seemed content to preen and ignore
those watching it. When asked, my advice was to release the grebe into a nearby
pond. This was done and the bird immediately swam out into the deeper part of
the pond. Presumably, it fed and rested until it was ready to continue its
migration.
