Gil Derouen, Reece Jamerson and Bryan Stevens visited Shady Valley, Johnson Co., on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

We had several species of sparrows at Quarry Bog, including Swamp and Song.

Bryan saw a Savannah Sparrow that went unobserved by Gil and Reece.

Later, Reece and Gil also observed a LeConte's Sparrow that was not seen by Bryan.

All three observed, but could not confirm, a possible Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow. The bird, in bad lighting, just didn't stay in view long enough, but it certainly looked interesting.

Other birds present;
Virginia Rail (1)
Wilson's Snipe (6)
Mallard (6)
Palm Warbler (12+)
Yellow-rumped Warblers
Great Blue Heron
Red-winged Blackbird (100+)

Prior to Shady Valley, a trip to Musick's Campground at S. Holston Lake, Sullivan County, yielded two Caspian Terns, 1 Forster's Tern, 2 Ring-billed Gulls and Eared and Pied-billed Grebes.

At Austin Springs, Boone Lake, Washington Co., they saw Great Egret, two Wilson's Snipe, numerous Killdeer, Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant and several Great Blue Herons.

Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
