These two interesting events occured during th past week. 1) 10/05 After a
dribble of Monarch butterflies through our property all week, on Thursday we
had
30+ Monarchs on one large, white butterfly bush, and several others scattered
among nine other butterfly bushes. Today, we still had a half-dozen Monarchs
in the yard. 2) This morning I was watching a White-tailed Deer doe near
our feeders. Suddenly she flinched, as if startled by something, and looked
intently away from the feeders. I readjusted my position to see in that
direction, and there was a Great Blue Heron standing in the yard. With ears
erect,
the doe began slowly walking toward the heron....clearly intrigued with it.
When she got close enough, she extended her neck to apparently sniff it. At
this
point, the heron, which seemed uncomfortable with the doe's approach, walked
a few steps away, jumped off the ground and flew away. The doe did not follow
the flight of the bird with her eyes.....looked around as if to say, "Where
did it go?" Then, it went back to nibbling on dandelions. I love our home
here, you never know what you will see! John Moyle
