[Bristol-Birds] Shady Valley Bog Watch

Some stalwart birders gathered early this morning at Quarry Bog for the annual Bristol Bird Club Bog Watch as part of the Shady Valley Cranberry Festival. Janice and Fred Martin and Bill Grigsby represented the BBC. Charles Moore from the Elizabethton Bird Club and India Watkins rounded out these hardy souls who were willing to challenge the rain and fog. Actually the weather was not too bad. Most of the precipitation was from low-lying clouds which resulted in a mist reminiscent of Andy Jones notes about high altitude birding in Costa Rica.

The impact of the fog/low clouds on visibility was a challenge, but the day was very enjoyable. We gathered under the dining fly sampling a variety of goodies brought by Janice and Fred and made occasional forays out on the paths into the bog. The best bird of the day was spotted about 1 PM by Janice "Hawkeye" Martin --- a Peregrine Falcon perched in a dead tree on the northwest side of the bog.

We had a good list of birds:
Great Blue Heron
Wood Duck
Blue-winged Teal
Turkey Vulture
Red-tailed Hawk
Peregrine Falcon
Killdeer
Mourning Dove
Belted Kingfisher
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Cedar Waxwing
Carolina Wren
Carolina Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
Blue Jay
American Crow
Palm Warbler
Savannah Sparrow
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Eastern Meadowlark
(all spoted in Johnson County, TN)

Bill Grigsby
