Subject: Nearly 3000 broadwings coming Thursday
Nearly 3000 broadwings were counted at Candler Mountain near Lynchburg, VA
today[SEPT. 27], 80 miles to our northeast. About half of these passed them at
about
noon and the other half between about 4 and 6 EDT. This was about the number
passing Pennsylvania count sites like Hawk Mountain on Sunday and
Connecticut and New Jersey sites on Saturday before the remnants of Rita
moved in on them. Mahogany Rock often gets what Candler Mountain sees, four
or five flight hours later. If we get any of these birds on the southeast
winds expected tomorrow, it will likely be in the morning or around noon. We
had only 58 broadwings with a total count of 70 for today, though I
continued looking until about 6:15 pm EDT. But we did have 5 ospreys and a
red-shouldered hawk among others.
