The Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter kicked off its annual October Bird Walks at
Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton, Carter Co., TN, on Saturday, Oct. 1.
The walks begin at 8 a.m. every Saturday in October from the parking lot at
the park's headquarters.
Attending the first walk: Sue Peters, Elizabethton; Paul and Gay Bischoff,
Gray; and Herndon chapter members Reece Jamerson, Johnson City; Brookie and
Jean
Potter, Elizabethton; and Bryan Stevens, Hampton.
Some of our best looks included a hovering American Kestrel that then
surprised everyone with a steep dive into the small cornfield near the
re-creation of
Fort Watauga in the park as well as several good looks at the numerous Palm
Warblers.
We saw 34 species:
Wood Duck
Mallard
American Kestrel
Mourning Dove
Rock Pigeon
Chimney Swift
Belted Kingfisher
Northern Flicker
Downy Woodpecker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
American Crow
Blue Jay
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
House Wren
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Eastern Bluebird
American Robin
Gray Catbird
Northern Mockingbird
European Starling
White-eyed Vireo
American Redstart
Black-and-white Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
