The Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter of TOS held its fourth of five October
Saturday bird walks at Sycamore Shoals State Park, Elizabethton, Carter County,
TN,
from 8 a.m.-10:30 a.m. on Oct. 23.
Highlights included a Merlin, spotted prior to the start of the walk by Larry
McDaniel of Johnson City, as well as White-crowned Sparrows, Field Sparrows
and Chipping Sparrows, American Kestrel and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. The only
warblers found were Yellow-rumped and Palm.
During the walk a perched Merlin allowed participants a good look, and also
allowed them to see a Merlin in flight when the bird departed. Was it a second
Merlin or the same individual observed earlier by McDaniel? It's migration, so
who knows?
Participants included McDaniel, Bryan Stevens, Hampton, David Thometz,
Hampton, Brookie and Jean Potter, Elizabethton, Jesse Bowman, Jonesborough, and
Teresa Epperson, Blountville.
Don Holt, Johnson City, met up with the participants toward the conclusion of
the walk which, admittedly, veered off the main trails and scouted out some
territory for no-show Orange-crowned Warbler and scarce sparrows.
The final walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 30. Come out and join us. Meet at
the parking lot at the park at 8 a.m.
Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
