Area Birders,
On Wednesday, 10/20/04, while birding in my field here on Compton Mt. in
Buchanan Co. I found a female BLACKPOLL WARBLER among some RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLETS and AM. GOLDFINCHES. I got a pretty good look at the bird before it
flew, and I knew it was something different. I saw that it had wing bars and
some white on the outer retrices as if flew. A few minutes later I saw it again
much closer, and I was able to photograph it. It has dark wings with two light
wing bars, a yellowish breast with faint streaking (though that doesn't show up
in the photo), white undertail coverts, a light colored face with a dark eye
line, and a light supercillium with a darker crown. I didn't notice the color
of the feet at the time, and they are difficult to see in the photo, though
when I exaggerated the lighting in the photo the feet seemed to be a lighter
color.
This bird is probably a 1st year female, but according to Peterson it is
difficult to make a distinction between a 1st year female and a fall adult
female. This is only the second Blackpoll ever recorded here in Buchanan
County. The first was found by Ed and Michelle Talbott here in my yard on
9/20/02. We can't understand why we don't find more of them here in the county.
We know they are seen in counties near us.
You can take a look at a not so great photo of this bird here.
