Fellow Birders,
The cold front that moved through last night brought several migrants through
my yard here on Compton Mt this morning. A PRAIRIE WARBLER was one of the first
species I saw when I stepped outside. A female BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER fed
in the top of a walnut tree. A female CAPE MAY was busy in the top of the tall
Red Cedar. 3 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were flitting around the yard. I was a bit
surprised to see a BLUE-HEADED VIREO coming to the little stream in the yard. I
hadn't seen one for a few weeks.
There were four sparrow species feeding; CHIPPING SPARROWS, SONG SPARROWS,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and one FIELD SPARROW. 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were
working the white pines in the front and backyards. 3 TN WARBLERS were working
the cherry trees, and several YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were feeding on Poison Ivy
berries.
At least 8, maybe more, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were feeding on the lawn, along with
5 NORTHERN FLICKERS.
A flock of about 45 CEDAR WAXWINGS were busy working the poke berries at the
edge of the field. Chipmunks made several trips to the bird feeders filling
their cheeks until they looked as if they would pop. They would then carry them
to their den under the rocks near the yard pond.
A COMMON RAVEN could be heard flying overhead, and later a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
circled over the valley.

The highlight of the day came in the late afternoon, when an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER showed up in the cherry tree outside the kitchen window. The lack of
contrast on the plain greenish-gray plumage, and the yellow undertail coverts
told me this was not a plain TN Warbler.
There were a total of 35 species in the yard during the day. For those
interested the complete list follows.

Enjoy the birds,
