Friday, October 17
7:00 PM- 8:00 PM RETURNING ENDANGERED WHOOPING CRANES TO THE EASTERN
UNITED STATES-Ken Dubke, of the Tennessee
Orinthological Society,
will present a program on the endangered species.
8:00 PM- 9:00 PM BIRDS OF PREY-Marty Silver of Warriors Path State Park
will present this campfire program with live animals. Come to learn more about
owls and other such animals while eating snacks around the campfire. Bring a
blanket to sit on.
Saturday, October 18
9:00 AM - 7:00 PM EXHIBIT AREA-Organizations participating are: Friends
of Steele Creek Park & Nature Center, TWRA, National Wildlife Federation,
Sierra Club, and many others
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM BIRD HIKE-Larry McDaniel of the Bristol Bird Club will
lead this nature hike to examine the bird
life in Steele Creek Park. Bring binoculars if you desire.
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM BIRD BANDING-Richard Lewis, a US Fish & Wildlife Service
Licensed Bird Bander will be conducting bird banding in the grassland
throughout the morning. Visit the grassland area to view bird life up
close and personal.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM CREEPY CRAWLY SALAMANDER HIKE-Christopher O'Bryan,
Steele Creek Park's Junior Naturalist, will be leading a nature hike into
Hemlock Hollow Trail in search of the park's salamander inhabitants for
children ages 5 to 11. Be sure to wear clothing and shoes that are able to get
wet and muddy.
12:00 PM - 12:45 PM Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center & Park Luncheon
for Presenters, Exhibitors, & Volunteers
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM BLACK BEARS OF SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS-Dr. Mike Pelton,
a retired UT professor, will be presenting this program on one of the animal
inhabitants of this region.
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM PLANTS OF A COVE FOREST-Anna Hess, a graduate of
Swarthmore College with a degree in Biology & Art, will be leading this hike to
examine some of the plant life found along Hemlock Hollow Trail. Wear clothing
appropriate for hiking.
5:15 PM - 6:30 PM BUTTERFLIES & DRAGONFLIES-Don Holt of the Clyde Austin
4-H Center in Greeneville will present a slide show on dragonflies and
butterflies. To identify the beautiful butterflies that visit your flowerbeds,
this slide show is for you!
6:45 PM PHOTO CONTEST AWARDS-Photos from the photo
contest will be on display throughout the day. If you're curious to find out
who won, come to see!
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM COLORS OF NATURE-Brad Jones of Winged Deer Park will
present a slide show surrounding the seasonal colors of flowers, foliage, and
other plant life.
8:30 PM - 9:15 PM CAMPFIRE PROGRAM-STORYTELLING-Storyteller Pat
Musselman as she spins tales around the campfire. Bring a blanket to sit on.
