After traveling to Middlebrook Lake in Bristol, TN with Roger &
Lynda Mayhorn and found the Ross's Goose. I decided to stop at
Rural Retreat Lake at exit 60 off interstate 81 in Virginia on
my way home. There were several new duck species which the cold
weather has brought in: Ruddy Duck (3), Common Goldeneye (1),
Green-wing Teal (18), Ring-neck Duck (25), American Wigeon (8),
Coot (8) along with the usual Mallards and Canada Geese. Also
found were 21 Dunlin, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 15 Killdeer and 18
Tree Swallows. It was very windy so the normal sparrows could
not be jumped up. All in all a great birding day on Halloween.
