Bristol Area Birders:
Today (30 Oct 2002) Larry McDaniel and Wallace Coffey
observed a Double-crested Cormorant with a color leg
band and a USF&WS leg band.
The bird was seen from the road near the dam at Middlebrook
Lake in Bristol, Tenn.
The color band was white numerals on green band.
The band was worn on the bird's right leg.
On the bird's left leg was a USF&WS band and we could only
read three digits which we did not think was a "prefix". I
had a feeling there would be digits before and after these three.
The bird was a juvenile (1st year) as determined from Sibley's
Guide to Birds (p. 51).
It was bserved perched on rock at shoreline of lake. The marker and band
were read from window of a parked auto, 25 feet from the bird with
8X42 binoculars.
It was with another unmarked Double-crested Cormorant and a small
number of Canada Geese. The bird appeared healthy.
The band report has been sent by e-mail to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service Bird Banding Laboratory, Patuxent, Md. and we should
have a report back shortly.
