[bristol-birds] LeConte's Sparrow at Shady Valley, TN

On Saturday morning (Oct. 19) Bryan Stevens and Howard P. Langridge went to
Quarry Bog at Shady Valley in Johnson County. We found Rick Knight there with
his banding operation, and he told us he had seen a Sora only minutes before we
arrived.
We went on into the bog while Rick checked his nets. We encountered Swamp,
Savannah and Song Sparrows until we heard some unusual call notes. Not long
after that, a LeConte's Sparrow popped into view for Bryan and then Howard. By
being methodical in approach, we didn't flush the bird into hiding, and Rick
eventually caught up with us and also saw the bird. The bird was very
cooperative, and we were able to study in all details all the vital fieldmarks.
We also had a single Bobolink that also insisted on occasionally getting into
the same frame with the LeConte's Sparrow.
Later, all three got good looks at a Sedge Wren.
In addition, two Common Snipe and a Virginia Rail were flushed. Other good
birds included Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks. We also had a flock of 28
Killdeer. Rick also heard a flyover American Pipit that went unheard by Howard
and Bryan.
When we left him, Rick was tending to a net with Swamp Sparrows, Song Sparrows,
Savannah Sparrows and Palm Warbler (but no LeConte's in the net).
Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
