A Shady Valley teenager who is becoming widely known throughout
the region as an accomplished naturalist, will lead a field trip Saturday
to one of the The Nature Conservancy's unique preserves during the annual
Cranberry Festival.
Chris O'Bryan, age 13, who has recently been named a Junior
Naturalist with the Steele Creek Park Nature Center in Bristol, TN, will
lead festival
participants on a nature walk over the new boardwalk at School Yard Spring
Preserve. The facility is located at the artesian springs behind Shady
Valley Elementary School.
The walk begin at 2 p.m. from the Pansy Patton Pavillion, on the
school grounds, and will cover a distance of about 200 yards. There is no
charge.
His nature walk will include a portion of the nine-acre preserve.
He will point out and talk about interesting species of animal life and
plant life which include the Carolina Maple and one of Tennessee's rarest
ferns, the Crested Shield Fern.
O'Bryan has become well known with natural history in the valley and
region while helping with the Knoxville Zoo's radio tracking study of an
endangered trutle species. He recently spent the day with the biologists at
the zoo learning about reptiles and amphibians.
He is a founding memeber of the newly-formed Steele Creek Natural
History Association which is a sponsor of his Cranberry Festival event along
with Adventure Damascus Tours. As a member of the association, he joins
with professional and amateur biologists who conduct original nature field
research in the region.
As a Junior Naturalist at Steele Creek Park Nature Center, he will
help maintain displays, animal collections, assist with field research and
lead both educational and public events to study the park's natural history.
In September he participated in a U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service-sanctioned bird banding station conducted by Rick Knight on Roan
Mountain.
He is the son of Laura and Don O'Bryan of Shady Valley.
