In mid-July members of the Bristol Bird Club requested that the
Steele Creek Park Nature Center enter into a cooperative agreement
with the Bristol Bird Club to arrange for a famed, national butterfly
guide author be invited here to speak.
The club also proposed this as a step towards a North American Butterfly
Association to be kickoff and rollout at a Steele Creek Park Nature
Center--based NABA - Northeast Tennessee Chapter. The park will not
be able to participate in any immediate cooperative effort.
It now appears that the formation of a "Don Holt Butterfly Club" of Northeast
TN is timely and appropriate. Don has been a constant source of encouragement
in the study of both butterflies and odonates for area naturalist and has long
conducted efforts for public education and annual counts of butterflies. He
has authored articles in state conservation magazines and helped others get
started.
Don as been a loyal member of BBC and supported its projects and
activities for many years.
Such a regional effort, could continue to be facilitated by BBC and moved to
the new
$10 million, 35,000-square-foot Natural History Museum of East Tennessee
and Gray Fossil Site. The museum could support the BBC and area naturalists
in soon getting a "Don Holt Butterfly Club" of Northeast TN underway.
The Natural History Museum is 1.8 miles southwest of Interstate 26 on Tennessee
Highway 75 between Kingsport, Bristol and Johnson City at the Gray community.
Dr. Jeanne Zavada, the museum's director, has considerable experience with
outreach, education and imaginary development.
