Mendota Hawk Watch Report for Friday, September 21, 2007
After days of wishing we had some clouds to provide a backdrop for easy
spotting of high-flying hawks, the clouds arrived today, but not the hawks. It
was
more like a "Smith-Barney" day-we counted our hawks just one at a time. The
wind was out of the Southeast again, and variable. The temperatures ranged from
62F-78F, and the visibility was very good-about 30+ miles. The sky was clear
early but became partly cloudy as the day moved on. The highlight of the day
was an adult Am. Bald Eagle, which was spotted in a kettle of vultures and one
Broad-winged hawk.
Observers were on duty from 9:00 a.m. till 6:15 p.m. These were Malcolm and
Marie Jones of Kingsport, TN, Ken Turner, Piney Flats, TN and Tom Hunter of
Lebanon. ETSU students April Fitzgerald and Brent Linville came by for a first
visit, and Tom's wife Laverne and Jean Montgomery of Lebanon arrived to help
with the late afternoon watch.
