Mendota Hawk Watch Report for Thursday, September 20, 2007
The action at the tower was relatively slow today compared to the last three
days. And the weather was almost a repeat of yesterday, except the cool,
morning wind out of the Southeast was blowing harder at times, with gusts over
20
mph. Hats and chairs were blowing around, and a light jacket felt good for a
while. The afternoon was warm and the sky was clear, making hawks very hard to
see. Visibility was 30+ miles.
Allen Gill and I arrived at 9:00 a.m., followed by Ron Pendleton, and Betsy
and Vick Briscoe. Wilma Boyd and Lois Cox, Bluff City, TN, came by for a couple
of hours. Later in the afternoon Terry Ponder and Taris Whitson, Johnson
City, TN, came by for a visit. We left at 6:30 p.m. Of the 270 Broad-wings
counted, 146 were by the tower by noon. The immature Bald Eagle came by very
high
around noon. We counted 8 Monarchs as time permitted.
