Mendota Hawk Watch Report for 9/19/06
Ted Dingler, Bob Quillen and Ron Harrington manned the watch from 12:00 noon
until 6:00 p.m. The rain moved out very quickly and by the time we were on
duty, hawks were already up and flying high. We experienced partly cloudy skies
most of the afternoon, and then mostly clear and sunny by evening. The cool
wind was fairly steady out of the northwest at 10-15 mph. Hawks were hard to
find
and see because they were scattered, very high, and on both sides of the
mountain. However, great visibility helped alot--the cold front had cleared
out
the smog/haze and you could see a long ways!
The best hour was 12-1 with 108 Broad-winged hawks. The Peregrine Falcon came
by around 5:30 p.m.
