Bird numbers were considerably down on upper Douglas Lake compared to what they
had been on September 2. In a couple of hours of birding time (not including
the evening roost), I observed the following:
C = Cocke County (Rankin Bottoms (RB), Dutch Bottoms)
J = Jefferson County (shoreline at J.M. Walters Bridge)
Canada Goose (250 C)
Great Egret (123 C, 4 J)
Osprey (RB)
Semipalmated Plover (11 RB)
Killdeer (8 RB, 6 J)
Greater Yellowlegs (RB)
Sanderling (5 RB)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (45 RB, 2 J)
Least Sandpiper (14 RB)
Pectoral Sandpiper (34 RB)
Buff-breasted Sandpiper (RB)
Short-billed Dowitcher (4 RB)
Red-necked Phalarope (RB)
Laughing Gull (J)
Caspian Tern (2 RB, 2 J--likely the same birds)
Forster's Tern (RB)
Black Tern (7 RB)
