Hi Hawk Watching Fans:
Here is the Mendota Hawk Report for September 24, 2004.  The year-to-date 
figures are in parentheses:

Broad-winged Hawk:     117   (4364)
Sharp-shinned Hawk:      1    (13)
Cooper's Hawk:              1    (9)
Am Bald Eagle:              -     (5)
Goshawk:                      -     (1)
Am Kestrel:                   -     (6)
Red-shouldered Hawk:    -     (2)
Osprey:                         -     (23)

Red-headed WP:           -      (22)

"Hot and High" can best describe the situation today. It was mostly clear 
with wispy clouds from vapor trails in the morning, then a few fluffy clouds 
drifted around in the hot afternoon. There was haze but visibility was about 30 
miles. Light winds were from the East in the a. m but slacked off in the p.m. I 
was the lone observer at the tower from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Harold and 
Violet Larkin were at the gap from 10:40 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The birds quickly 
rose up on the thermals and were flying very high by noon, and were very hard 
to see. Susan Peters from Elizabethton, and Judy Bridwell-Middlemas from 
Johnson City visited for about an hour and got to see some hawks. 

The Mendota Fire Tower is located atop beautiful Clinch Mountain, elevation 
3100, at the border of Washington and Russell Counties in VA. The site is about 
3 miles North of Mendota, VA. Contact me if you want directions. The watch is
