After what seemed to be an eternity before the late summer migration began, I
finally am seeing some movement in my yard. On 09/14 I had two magnolia
warblers and a hooded warbler. On 09/15 I had an eastern wood pewee feeding
and a
beautiful peregrine falcon gliding through about 20 - 30 feet off the
ground(not a bad yard bird!).
Today, I also observed some interesting hummingbird behavior! I noticed some
large wasps (golden abdomen and orange thorax and head) feeding on sap at
apparent woodpecker holes in an elm tree. A ruby-throat would chace a wasp
away
and lap up some of the sap before the wasp attacked the hummer and drove it
off. I was unaware of ummingbirds taking sap in this manner.
