Peggy Spiegel, a long-time leader of the Virginia Society of Ornithology and
one of the state's most outstanding birders, will be the speaker when the
Bristol Bird Club gathers for our annual banquet Friday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
President Rack Cross has completed arrangements with "THE CENTER," one of
Bristol's most frequently-choosen private dinning centers for large community
and private dinners. The attractive facility, located near the intersection of
U.S. 421 Hwy. and TN Rt 394 (Ernie Ford Parkway, a.k.a. Bristol beltway :-)
will be a comfortable and attractive
venue for another tremendously successful BBC Annual Banquet.

Spiegel's talk will be "Prince Edward and the Pack Ice" This is about her
recent birding trip aboard a no frills research vessel. She will take you on
one of the most extreme birding experiences imaginable. The ride starts at the
tip of South Africa, swings out to the Prince Edward Islands and finally
reaches the pack ice of Antarctica. From albatross to penguins the birds along
the way are truly specialists in this beautiful but seemingly inhospitable
environment. You will thrill to think that a birder just like you lives a
dream like this with binocs in hand and warm clothes to endure the unmerciful
conditions.

Spiegel has birded for years. She is a former owner of For The Birds store at
Roanoke, Va. For several years she has organized the annual VSO summer field
trips to Whitetop and Mount Rogers. She has participated in the nation's
largest birding competion. She has frenquently birded in our immediate region,
including Northeast Tennessee. We look forward to her exciting program.

The Bristol Bird Club has made a major effort to provide a wonderful evening
out for our members and a great dinner with a very fine speaker. We need a
real good crowd in order not to have to pay for our guarantee of persons if we
can't make it. This is a real gamble. We need your help. Dress is casual.
Wear whatever will provide you a comfortable evening.

We anticipate having special live classical dinner music to enhance your
evening.

The menu will be prepared by Norwegian Chef Joseph Zacherissen (Joe Zac) and
will include Mixed Green Salad (with all the toppings), Crackers, Fresh Baked
Yeast Rolls, Carved Roast Beef, Baked Chicken with sauce, Southern Style Green
Beans, Buttered Fresh Vegetable Medley, Herbed New Potatoes, Apple Cobbler,
Vanilla Ice Cream, Iced Tea, and Coffee. Special needs should be addressed
ASAP and you may contact President Rack Cross at rack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for
details about how to arrange for special needs.

The dinner will cost $21.00 and will be served in a very private dinning room
which has great comfort, is spacious and an excellent view of a large screen
for enjoying the program. Children may eat at one-half price.

Please notify Janice Martin at jancie@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if you will be
attending. Some of you have already paid in advance. While everyone in the
region is invited to attend, persons who are not members of the BBC must send
a check payable to the Bristol Bird Club in advance to:

Janice Martin
701 Euclid Ave. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED BY WED. SEPT. 15
Bristol, Va 24201
Phone 276-466-8678

Janice reserves the right to make whatever arragements she deems appropriate
with handling advance guest payments. Members of the BBC, may simply notify
Janice by mail at janice@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx of their intention to attend.
You then may pay at the door. However, anyone who makes a reservation will
have to make payment even if they are unable to attend or have a change of
plans. All arrangments are final.

As with all the BBC does, you are invited to bring a friend, special friend,
significant other, spouse, children (children may eat at one-half price),
neighbors or some hot birder you have always wanted to go out with. Bring your
in-laws, out-laws or favorite lawyer.

This is usually seen at the kickoff to the coming Bristol Bird Club year.

President Rack Cross is tremendously excited about this event. His leadership
of Dave Worley, Larry McDaniel, Diana Worley, Janice Martin, Ron Harrington,
Wallace Coffey, Mary Jane Erwin and Bill Girgsby have worked more than a month
planning, scouting locations, telephoning for arrangments and prices and menus.
The team has exchanged dozens of e-mails and telephone calls to plan for this
and make decisions on arrangments.

In the final days, President Cross soley made the decision for the venue after
visiting THE CENTER with his wife.

The center is located just uphill from the traffic light at the intersection fo
US. 421 and TN Rt. 394. Persons coming from Abingdon and north can drive down
Va. Rt. 75 from Abingdon past Musick's Campground and turn right on U.S. 421 to
the traffic light.

TN Rt. 394 begins at Exit 69 (Blountville) of I-81 and passes Bristol Motor
Speedway, ending at the traffic light at U.S. 421 almost insight of THE CENTER.

THE CENTER is located off the road to the right on a hill and has a nicley
marked private entrance. You will have private parking at the front door.and
walk to your dinning room all on one level. This is a classy facility, and
should serve the Bristol Bird Club, you and your guest well for an exciting and
wonderful evening out. We'll see you there.

Let's go birding......
