Kevin Elam, who did his masters thesis research with Dr. Fred Alsop at ETSU on
Unaka Mountain in Unicoi Co., TN looking at study plots for Magnolia Warblers,
has been selected to fill the position as Nature Center Manager at the Steele
Creek Park Nature Center in Bristol Tennessee. His first day is expected to be
Tuesday, Sept. 7.
He completed his masters degree earlier this year. He is a graduate of King
College in Bristol Tennessee and attended Daniel Boone High School at Gray, TN.
He formerly worked at Warriors Path State Park at Kingsport.
He fills a positon vacated by Alex Coley, who left the center August 13, to
take a high school faculty and assistant football coaching job at Wartburg High
School west of Oak Ridge. Coley took the naturalist position at Steele Creek
in December 2003.
Elam will be the third person in this positon which was originally held for
seven years by Kevin Hamed until he joined the faculty of Virginia Highlands
Community College last fall to teach biology. Hamed became a regional leader
and worker in natural history and the Steele Creek Nature Center had fast
become a program model and state award winning center.
Let's go birding....
