I couldn't stand it, I had to do something to contribute, so I went to
look for pelagics on our little one acre canoeing pond. I'm happy to report
that Isabel caused no damage or dislocation of birds there.
Afterwards, I went to the top of the hill to check the fencerow in the
middle of a large field. I found an American Kestrel there, as well as a
Northern Mockingbird and a Loggerhead Shrike sharing a shrub. The shrike was
flying out into the recently harvested tobacco field to catch insects on the
ground, I think. A pair of Northern Flickers tried to harass the Kestrel. A
small
flock of what may have been American Pipits took off and spent several minutes
zigzagging around the sky, as one of the eleven seemed bent on chasing a
slightly larger bird, and the other ten kept trying to follow. Not bad for a
twenty minute break between classes. I credit the weather gods for inspiring
me
to get out and look.
