Unaka Mountain
Unicoi Co., TN
Limestone, TN area
Musick's Lakeside Campground
Sullivan Co., TN
.
This morning Sam Cross, Wallace Coffey and I enjoyed a very hands-on
experience under the supervision Rad Mayfield as we participated in the 28th
consecutive year of the George Mayfield Bird Banding Station. Rad (George the
III) is
operating on a sub-permit of his father's Master Bander permit. This is the
first year that George Mayfield II has been unable to man this station and this
due to his health. Birds banded during our visit included:
.
Tennessee Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Blue-headed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Swainson's Thrush
.
Sam's highlight was removing a couple of birds from the mist nets after close
instruction from Wallace. The highlight of my trip was watching Sam learn to
remove birds from the nets at the same time I was learning to remove birds
from the nets!
The station is located on the Appalachian Trail near the TN / NC line.
Visitors must travel through Wolf Laurel (gated) Community to Stamping Ridge.
Our group also birded in the Limestone, TN area with very little activity-
Barn and Tree Swallows, Green Heron. Sam and I went on to Musick's Lakeside
Campground after dropping off a road worn Coffey. Not much activity to report
there either: 5-Great Egrets and 1-Spotted Sandpiper were best of evening.

'Til we bird again
