Tuesday morning(Sep 24) at Whitetop Mtn. I had a fairly good warbler
wave, of course nothing like at Roger Mayhorns in Grundy, but a good
flight for our side of the moutain. Amr. Redstart, Blackburnian, Blk.
throated Blue, Canada, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Palm and Tennessee
Warblers were on the mountain along with Swainsons & Hermit Thrushes,
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Red-eyed & White-eyed Vireo were also seen.
Normal mountain birds were Winter Wren, Red-breasted Nuthatch & Ruby
Crowned & Golden Crowned Kinglets with a couple of Ravens. I then
traveled down the mountain to Rural Retreat Lake and found a large
group of Mallards, Blue-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe along with
over 100 Canada Geese. But the bird of the day came when I was on my
way out of the Rural Retreat Lake area, as you exit the Rural Retreat
Lake road there are freshly cut corn fields to the west. I stopped
to scan through a large flock of Killdeer feeding on the freshly cut
corn and spotted an Upland Sandpiper (very typical fall plumage of
mottled brown spotting, short yellowish bill with dark tip, white
eye line around the small face and dark eye. A group of Crows start-
ed to harass the bird and as it flew the dark brown wing tips were
very noticeable. A good bird to finish off the day and head home.
