Bristol Birders:

Ron Harrington and Larry McDaniel are leading a major
Bristol Bird Club effort to cover and report the migration
of hawks at Mendota Firetower on a daily basis throughout
the fall. This is the first year the BBC has conducted this
project.

Mendota lookout is atop Clinch Mountain, along the Russell
County/Washington County border -- north of Kingsport,
west of Bristol, just above the Washington County community
of Mendota on the North Fork Holston River.

Hawk migration counting during September to November
has been carried out at the Mendota lookout since Stephen
Russell and Fred Behrend first discovered this southern
passage point 50 years ago.

We can't heap enough praise on Ron Harrington for
working to co-chair the project, spend many days at
the lookout, gather names of birders and reports and
to sit and hammer out for the Bristol Birds Net his daily
reports of each day's results and an annual total.

Go guys, go!! Thanks to Ron and Larry for all they are
doing for birders and keeping up the hawk counting.

And, to you Ron, we all tip our hats, extend our praise
and appreciation and encourage you to keep up the
good reporting for all of us along the net.

"Here comes a kettle right off Brumley, about 10 o'clock,
over in the big white cloud to the left......some are
coming out of the clouds.....moving thru the blue. Hey!
Over here! There's a big group getting past us to the east!
Here's a Peregrine coming in low! Very low! Right at
us!. Right at us! Wow! Look at that would you!!!"

Ron and Larry need as much help as all of you can give.
They'd love to have you come atop the mountain and
join them. They'd love to teach you anything you you want
to know about finding and learning to ID the hawks. These guys
love it and love teaching others. If you don't want to be
instructed, just go up and be a fly on the mountain. Enjoy
the fabulous view of the great country below. Watch the
excitement. Take a nap.

Keep reporting guys ....
