Bristol Area Birders,
This morning I was out early again. David Raines, a member of our Buchanan
County Bird and veteran birder, came to enjoy the migration with me. In the
course of the morning we managed to log 39 species, though the number of
warblers seemed to be down a bit. I guess I shouldn't complain, right?
The bird of the day was a Warbling Vireo that gave us great looks from a
Shiny Sumac bush. The other birds of note were 6 Black-throated Green
Warblers, 4 Magnolia Warblers, 17 Tennessee Warblers, 1 Yellow-rumped
Warbler, 2 Swainson's Thrushes, 3 White-eyed Vireos, 1 Red-eyed Vireo, 1
female Rose-breasted Grosbeak, 5 Scarlet Tanagers, 23 Cedar Waxwings and 1
Cooper's Hawk. Later in the day after David had left I turned the corner of
the house and was staring a deer in the eye. It had been eating apples from
under the apple tree. Fawn spots were still barely visible on its coat. We
stared at each other for about 15 seconds, then I very slowly backtracked
hoping it would stay long enough so that I could go get my wife, Lynda. The
deer was still there unmoving, when I disappeared around the corner.
Unfortunately, by the time we got back it was gone.
