Birders,
As a Biology teacher and bus driver I get some opportunity to be outside around
daylight and at dusk. Some days are good, some not.
Last Friday at 5:45am as I was leaving for school/bus run I had 2 Eastern
screech owls in my yard. One was in an oak near the house, the other was about
200 feet away in a beech snag. On my bus run I saw a red-tailed hawk near the
Wise-Lee line on the Powell River. Scarlet Tanager near Powell Valley High
School (PVHS)
Saturday at Natural Tunnel SP at the Stock Creek Interpretive Center the
following birds were seen/heard;
kingfisher, GBH, 4 ruby throated humming birds, 12-15 goldfinches, pileated
woodpecker, 1 adult RTH and her 2 fledglings (I assume, the pair have been
active in some trees near Stock Creek all summer), wild turkey, ruffed grouse,
bobwhite quail, 1 pair common ravens.
Sunday in Big Stone Gap; many goldfinches on the thistle feeder, screech owls
again, blue-jays, red bellied woodpecker, chickadee, downy woodpecker.
Monday in BSG; daylight dozens of chimney swifts at PVHS, 2 turkey vultures
feeding on roadkill in front of PVHS on rte. 610
Tuesday at Mountain Empire Community College: 21 common nighthawks in a flight
over campus, 12-15 chimney swifts
I would like to announce to anyone interested that the BBC is leading birding
hikes at NTSP the weekend of September 15. Details coming later.
Bill Cawood; BSG, NTSP
