Subject: Coastal Birding Trip to South Carolina (September 2-5, 2005)
Participants: Anyone interested
Hello Everyone,
At the annual planning meeting of the Lee and Lois Herndon Chapter of the
Tennessee Ornithological Society (02 August 2005), several members were
enthusiastic about taking extended field trips ("over-nighters"). Larry
McDaniel is heading a field trip planning committee and is currently
looking into the possibilities for a winter trip (after Christmas), but
some folks were interested in a fall trip also. Larry asked Don Holt and
myself if we could plan a fall trip. Here is what we have planned:
This will be an extended weekend trip to the South Carolina coastal area.
Unless I can find cheaper rates, we will be staying in the North Charleston
area (~5-6 hours from Johnson City, TN). We are planning to depart on
Friday afternoon (09/02/05) and return on Monday evening (09/05/2005) =
three nights. Because it is Labor Day weekend, motel rates are a little
higher than usual (~$79.99 per night is the cheapest I have found in the
general area = Best Western). This does not include taxes and extras (such
as a roll-away bed)...so the expense could very well exceed $100.00 per
night/per room (divided by the number of persons in each room).
The main purpose of this post is to find out how many folks are seriously
interested in taking this extended field trip. I would like for "all
folks" who are interested to let me know by Wednesday, August 24, 2005. I
do realize this is short notice (and I sincerely apologize for that), but
we would need to make reservations as soon as possible (since it is the
last summer holiday). If you would rather make reservations on your own,
that would be fine also. We could plan a location and time to meet each
morning and carpool from there. But I would still like to have an idea of
how many folks will be in the birding party.
In addition to shorebirds and other migrants, many summer resident birds
should still be around. There is the potential to see well over 100
species of birds. It is also a great time of the year to observe lots of
other wildlife.
Potential areas to visit: Huntington Beach State Park, Francis Marion
Nation Forest, areas of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, Kiawah
Island, ACE Basin, Folly Island, Audubon Swamp Garden, and many others.
