23 AUG 04
South Holston Lake
Sullivan Co., TN
Washington Co., VA
.
For a different view of birds around the South Holston Lake this time of year
Bristol Birders took a cruise on a pontoon boat departing from Painter Creek
Boat Dock and venturing well into Virginia up the river channel past the
Bristol, VA water intake structure.
Wallace Coffey provided the aqueous taxi and had aboard Tom Laughlin, Chris
O'Bryan, Sam Cross, and myself.
Although not discussed with the group, Sam Cross declared later that the bird
of the day was an imm. Bald Eagle.
We did make a pit stop at Musick's Lakeside Campground and saw Virgil
"Lightening" Carr swing into action as part of our pitcrew. We coasted into the
campground on the fumes of fuel after fighting an unexpected head wind most of
the
way back from our turn around point. Virgil, err Lightening, came to our
rescue in an instant providing the much needed petroleum and an automobile
escort
to ensure we reached our destination safely. To him go our thanks and heart
felt gratitude.
Chris O'Bryan served statistical duty and tallied our count for today. The
following is a partial list of sighted species:
.
Pied-billed Grebe (first of season)
Great Blue Heron
Green Heron
Great Egret
Bald Eagle
Osprey
Killdeer
Spotted Sandpiper
Belted Kingfisher
.
'Til we bird again
