Area Birders:
Jim Elliott, an attorney frined who lives on Riverside Road along the South 
Fork Holston River in Sullivan County, TN, called a few minutes ago to report 
that he and his wife have a Great White Heron which has settled into a tree 
across the river from his home for the evening (8/20). He knew instantly that 
this was a very large white heron and it did not have black legs as in the 
Great Egret.  He searched its status in Tennessee on the internet and learned I 
had seen one a year or so ago at South Holston Lake.

He said the bird is about .9 miles upstream from the Webb Bridge (old Weaver 
Pike Bridge area) on the south side of the river.

This is the first time this white Flordia form of the Great Blue Heron has been 
seen away from South Holston Lake in Northeast Tennessee.

This is a very rare bird to observe anywhere in the eastern U.S. outside of 
Florida.  They evidently disperse north of their breeding grounds at this time.
