The Virginia Highlands Festival traditional Creeper Trail Bird Walk was held 
Saturday morning.  I was the festival opening-even bird walk leader for my 10th 
consecutive year.
With beautiful weather, a crowd of 27 birders showed up for the leisurely two 
hours out on the trial.  One woman from Berkley, California was thrilled to get 
life birds in the east and especially a Scarlet Tanger first spotted by 
Victoria Hanson of the Bristol Bird Club.  

John Hay and I were pretty certain we saw a Merlin flying over the town of 
Abingdon right at the end of the walk. 

After the walk was concluded birder Jerry Thornhill wanted to make a photograph 
of the 18 folks who were still hanging around.  It turned out to be such a good 
photo I have included it on the Bristol Birds Net photo pages which you may
