Bristol Area Birders,
The birds were active in my yard again this morning, possibly because of the
rain we had during the night and the temperature drop to 62 degrees.
When I first stepped outside a male Hooded Warbler suddenly appeared in the
walnut tree only a few feet away. I stood very still and it fed through the
tree, fussing a bit with a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.
Moments later a Black-throated Green flew to the top of the apple tree amid
the House Finches that were feasting on a couple of apples. A few minutes
after the Black-throated Green moved to another tree a Gray Catbird landed
in the apple tree and searched busily among the branches heavy laden with
apples.
I saw a bird in the distance on the very top branch of a maple. When I got
the binocs on it I was looking at a brightly colored male Baltimore Oriole.
A few minutes later an adult Worm-eating Warbler landed in the top of
another walnut tree, where it proceeded to search for food among the leaves.
It quickly decided to move on and was gone.
Two White-breasted Nuthatches fed along the trunk of one of the walnut
trees, while two Red-eyed Vireos constantly chased each other or other
birds. I could hear a White-eyed Vireo singing scraps of song from the
nearby woods.
An Eastern Kingbird flew into the yard and landed atop a tall White Pine,
and an Eastern Phoebe sat on the lower branch of a walnut tree and flew down
from time to time to catch insects near the lawn.
Meanwhile the Goldfinches and Mourning Doves flew back and forth traveling
to the feeders on the other side of the house.
A couple of hours later I looked out the window and saw two Black-throated
Greens feeding among the blossoms of the Joe Pye Weed, or Queen of the
Meadow near the side yard pond.
It was a nice morning to be out there.
