On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-11, I also saw a dramatic increase in some
colorful neotropicals, including eight species of warblers, Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers and more Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, around my home in Hampton,
TN, in Carter County.
Warblers seen:
Worm-eating, Hooded, Canada, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green,
Black-and-white, Ovenbird and Chestnut-sided.
I think they are probably dispersing from nearby areas. For instance,
Chestnut-sided and Canada are two species I am fairly certain do not breed near
my home, but can be found breeding on nearby Roan Mountain and Holston
Mountain.
Regardless, after all my July walks at home failed to detect more than an
occasional Hooded Warbler or Red-eyed Vireo, it was nice to see actual mixed
flocks of warblers, whether they are only dispersing prior to migration or not.
