Greetings to all observers of Nature,
The annual butterfly count at Roan Mtn. will take place Saturday, July
17, 2004. Everyone is welcome, no experience is required. We will meet at 10
am at the Visitors' Center in Roan Mtn. State Park. We will carpool to the
nearby Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area for the morning hours, then head
up
the mountain to the Rhododendron Gardens for a picnic lunch. There is a
small country store on the way up where you can purchase drinks, snacks and
groceries. After lunch we hope to find lots of Aphrodite Fritillaries as we
walk
around the Rhododendron Gardens. As weather and time allows, we will look at
several other spots around the area and in the park. Anyone interested in
making a separate hiking party to count on the Appalachian Trail along the
grass
balds should feel free to contact me for details. The results of the count
will
be reported to the North American Butterfly Association. NABA requests a $3
fee from adult participants, who will be listed in the published report. Come
prepared for rain AND sun, as weather on the mountain can be quite
changeable. Please contact me if you have any questions.
