Bristol Birders,
Poplar Gap Park is the site of this years Buchanan Co. Fair and is located on a
reclaimed
mountain-top strip mine. While parking on the upper parking area, Michelle and
I found a
flock of about 27 Horned Larks. I had found Horned Larks on various strip mine
sites in
the county in the past but never more than a couple at a time. The flock
contained many
juvenile birds as well as both male and female adults. As far as I know this
is some of
the first breeding evidence for the county. A very nice find for our mostly
wooded
county. Luckily I had brought my binoculars along for the concert that night.
By the way, Bobby Bare, Billy "Crash" Craddock, and John Anderson put on a heck
of a
show - and the admission was only a dollar.
