A turnout of 37 birders from seven states participated in the Virginia
Creeper Bird Walk this morning as the first event of the famous Virginia
Highlands Festival opened in Abingdon, VA.

Under sunny skies with the temperatures in the 60s it was a beautiful day
for hiking and enjoying birds along the rails-to-trails pathway starting at
the trailhead on Green Springs Road.

It was enjoyable to have one hiker who is virtually blind and learned birds
by sound and from the conversations of other birders and the trip leader.

I want to thank area birders from over a wide region who came to support the
hike and walk with us. We had good turnouts from Johnson City, Kingsport,
Bristol, Morristown and even Alvarado, Va. and Kingston, TN.

I particularly want to thank Randy Smith of John Battle High School who was
the festvial representative who joined us. Randy kept records and is an
outstanding life-long birders and former coach. Tom McMullen is chair of
the outdoors events for this year's festival and is doing a nice job.

It was great fun meeting many new birders from the area, some which will
soon join the Bristol Bird Club and others who have joined Bristol Birds Net.

We welcome our new friends online with us here in the great Mountain Empire
Birding Region.

Thanks to the Bristol Bird Club memebers who attended and offered excitement
and fellowship with our visitors.

Let's go birding......
