[Bristol-Birds] Great Blue Heron colony

The newly-reported nesting colony of Great Blue Herons, discovered 29 May at
Fickles Island on Boone Lake in Sullivan, Co., TN, still had large young in the
nests Thurs (21 Jun). It appears that at least two nests had very large young
and an adult went to the nest and fed them. One nest, well up the ridge from
the shoreline, now appears empty.
The nests are located downstream of DeVault Bridge on the South Fork Holston
River embayment of the reservoir.
One Double-crested Cormorant was standing under the nests just as last month.
No cormorant's nest could
be detected. Perhaps this bird is retrieving food items that fall from the
nest during the very active antics
of the young herons when food is brought to the nest.
