A Purple Martin, seen flying over Quarry Bog in Shady Valley, Johnson Co.,
8 June, was the first June record for the valley in 42 years. The last
martin seen there was 30 years ago. It was only the sixth record for Shady
which is the state's highest mountain valley at 2,800 feet elevation.
Tom Laughlin and Wallace Coffey observed the martin which was first spotted
flying low over our heads by Rick Knight.
Previous June records are for 1937 (U.S. National Museum party); 1963 by Dr.
Joe Howell of the University of Tennessee; 1964 Shady Valley Foray (Wallace
Coffey); 1976 Tennessee Ornithological Society Foray (Ken Dubke, Dave
Hassler, Robbie Hassler, George R. Mayfield. Jr., Wiley Taylor) and 1976
(Ken Dubke).
On 5 June 2006 (Rick Knight) and 8 June 2006 (Wallace Coffey) observed Cliff
Swallows nesting under the U.S. 421 highway bridge over Beaverdam Stream in
Shady Valley. Coffey determined at least three nest and had six birds. The
species began nesting in Shady Valley three years ago.
Let's go birding...
