Roan Mountain Highlands
My son (J.T.) and I spent most of the afternoon and early evening on Roan
Mountain today (from Carver's Gap up to the south end of the Cloudland
Trail). It was an absolutely beautiful day! Unfortunately, the gardens
were not as colorful as we would have liked, but the weather made up for
it. It seemed like you could see forever.
We picked up some good birds also:
Ruffed Grouse (1)
Turkey Vulture (3)
Mourning Dove (2)
Chimney Swift (2)
Ruby-throated Hummingbird (1)
Alder Flycatcher (1)
Solitary Vireo (1)
Common Raven (1)
Red-breasted Nuthatch (1)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (several)
Veery (3)
HERMIT THRUSH (1) - We located this bird along the Cloudland Trail about
midways between the Rhododendron Gardens and the beginning of the final
auto loop (the closed section). We first detected it by call, after we got
several Juncos scolding us. But it soon flew in quite near.
Unfortunately, we never got to hear it sing.
Wood Thrush (2) - while driving up to Carver's Gap (TN side)
American Robin (5)
Gray Catbird (1)
Chestnut-sided Warbler (2)
Black-throated Blue Warbler (3) - while driving up to Carver's Gap (TN side)
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (1) - A nice-looking male was singing at the
beginning of the trail up to Roan High Bluff (which is currently closed).
Canada Warbler (several) - while driving up to Carver's Gap (TN side)
Eastern Towhee (2)
Dark-eyed Junco (several)
Northern Cardinal (2)
Indigo Bunting (1)
PINE SISKIN (6) - Always in pairs. Carver's Gap, parking lot at the fee
station, and the south end of Cloudland Trail.
American Goldfinch (3)
