[Bristol-Birds] Pete Range finds late White-crowned Sparrow (GA)

Giff Beaton of Marietta, GA reported Friday that he had just received a phone
call from Pete Range and Paul Sykes on Wassaw Island, Georgia reporting they
had caught a very late White-crowned Sparrow in one of their bunting nets,
11 June, which is the only June record ever for this species in Georgia. The
previous late date for Georgia was 28 May 1977, also on the coast. The latest
inland record is 14 May.
I think many Herndon Chapter TOS members at Elizabethton and Bristol Bird Club
members will remember Pete Range. Pete grew up and went to school in Johnson
City, TN and was active in the Tennessee Ornithological Society.
Pete was also the BBC annual banquet speaker in September 1996. He spent time
hawk watching with us at Mendota Fire Tower while he was here that weekend. He
also came back to visit with us later. He has been on our Whitetop - Mt.
Rogers Christmas bird counts in past years as well as many Herndon Chapter
counts.
Pete is a biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, working as a field
biologist on southern coastal wildlife preserves. He grew up as a member of
the Herndon Chapter and probably continues as a member.
I thought many of you would enjoy a little update on one of Pete's recent finds.
Let's go birding......
