Although this list was created primarily to discuss area birds, I know Wallace
and a number of subscribers are just plain ole' general naturalists interested
in many aspects of local flora and fauna. Just for fun I have taken a few
photos to make you aware of some local fish. This may give you something else
to pass the time when you're out birding in the region. Follow this link to

. One of my favorites is the Saffron Shiner. This is a small 2-4 inch minnow
common in our area in cooler streams (for instance in Shady Valley in Beaverdam
creek). The sight of a hundred of these small fish congregated in a writhing
mass to spawn will simply take your breath away. The fish in the photo came
from a small stream near Kingsport called Timbertree Branch. The brilliant
coloration, rivaling many coral reef tropical fish, only lasts a few weeks
during spawning season (late april to june). Also take a look at the Tennessee
Dace. This is a rare fish listed in Tennessee as a species in need of
management due to it's limited distribution and very specific habitat
requirements. Kevin Hamed formerly chief naturalist at Steele Creek Park
studied this fish for his Master's thesis project. They are found in the park
at Bristol. Just thought I'd share with nature lovers in the group.
