[observations made 31 May]
Dutch Bottoms (DB) and vicinity, upper Douglas Lake, Cocke County;
Rankin Wildlife Management Area (RWMA), Rankin Bridge (RB), and
vicinity, upper Douglas Lake, Cocke County
Yesterday in a brief trip to Rankin and nearby areas in Cocke County,
Alice Loftin and I observed the following:
Double-crested Cormorant (3);
Green Heron (3);
Great Egret (2 RWMA);
Wood Duck (5 RWMA);
Osprey (2 DB, 2 with 1 young RB);
Bald Eagle (2 adults RWMA);
Spotted Sandpiper (RWMA);
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (4);
Ruby-throated Hummingbird (2);
Great Crested Flycatcher;
Eastern Kingbird (2);
Tree Swallow;
Northern Rough-winged Swallow;
Cliff Swallow (40+ RB);
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (5);
Wood Thrush;
White-eyed Vireo (RWMA);
Warbling Vireo (RB);
Red-eyed Vireo (2);
Prothonotary Warbler (4 RWMA, 1 RB);
Common Yellowthroat (RWMA);
Kentucky Warbler (Lehigh Drive, located across Highway 25E from lower
DB, just south of the church);
Yellow-breasted Chat (RWMA);
Summer Tanager (adjacent to RWMA);
Blue Grosbeak;
Indigo Bunting (11);
Chipping Sparrow;
Orchard Oriole (5).
I'm planning to canoe the Rankin area with Leslie Gibbens and Michael
Sledjeski soon, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm sure the
treasure trove we saw and heard from the shore is only a preview of
coming attractions.
