[bristol-birds] BBC Clinch River Canoe Trip Details
- From: Wallace Coffey <jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx>

The following information is for those participating in the downriver birding
canoe trip as part of the program offering of the Bristol Bird Club
weekend get-a-way rally at the Rikemo Lodge along the Clinch River
Friday-Saturday-Sunday (June 14-15-16).
The canoes are full at this time. The only persons who may be added
to the trip at this date are those who can bring their own canoe and
shuttle their own boat for the river trip. We have no further capabilities
to help handle boats and passengers except to lead you along the
river for birding.
We will put in at Cleveland Town park on the Clinch River in Russell County, VA.
Launch Time (that's when we want to be in the water): 8:00 AM
Gather by 7:45 AM
Safety Instructions will begin at 7:45 while we are setting up the shuttle.
Those who are coming Friday evening to spend the night and help with
logistics will coordinate their final details for the canoe trip at the
lodge on Friday evening.
Items to Bring: Sunscreen, Bug Repellent, sun glasses, shoes you can get
wet, hat, birding items. You may want to wear clothing that will protect
your arms and face from sun rays, depending upon your individual needs.
Notes: I'll have 2 big dry bags with me for lunches and whatever.
Ziploc Bags (quart and gallon size make inexpensive dry bags for field
guides, cameras etc.. Bring your own Ziploc Bags. If nothing else, you
protect these items from water splashing into your canoe when paddles
are lifted from side to side. They are also protected from any water or
mud tracked into your boat. If you do not know whether your binoculars
are waterproof, bring a good zip bag as a standby incase you need it.
Directions, coming from Bristol/Abingdon, take the first Lebanon exit off US
19/460. Turn left on state route 82 (SR82) west toward Cleveland. You'll go
up and over Copper Ridge after you leave Lebanon and will descend into
the town of Cleveland. Continue on SR 82 into Cleveland and cross the bridge
over the Clinch. Make the immediate left onto SR 664 (it's a T
intersection), go appx 1/2 mile and the Cleveland Town park is on the left.
Park near the picnic shelter as that is near the boat launch area. (You may
also see public boat landing signs pointing you to Cleveland Town Park.)
To see a complete description of the longer canoe trip (ours is only about 6
miles) go to:

This stretch of water is mostly flat and wide but has a nice steady current
that will allow us to float at a leisurely pace. Long flat pools with a nice
current separated by shallow shoals typify this section of the Clinch. It is
leisurely paddling with no real appreciable whitewater. This float trip is
considered easy and we are glad to instruct you on the basics of canoeing if
you are a beginner. Two people per boat with children welcome as long as
parents will maintain responsibility for them. Life vests are supplied and
participants are expected to wear them.
